3D Printer Makes Parts for Ankle Replacement Surgery

Dr. Marvin Brown of the San Antonio Orthopaedic Group and his patient Bettye Dube were featured in a story on the INBONE™ Total Ankle Replacement. Dr. Brown describes the components of the implant and how artificial ankles have improved over the years. Bettye discussed the accident that she had on vacation that lead to her surgery and her positive outcome after undergoing the procedure.

PROPHECY™ INBONE™ is the first and only Pre-operative Navigation system available for Total Ankle Replacement. The system combines computer imaging and the patient’s own CT scan to develop a patient-specific pre-operative plan. “3D Printing” is utilized to produce instrument guides for each individual patient, to aid the surgeon in positioning of the INBONE™ implants.

Newer Ankle Replacement Devices Aid Range of Motion

The NBC affiliate in Miami aired a story on the benefits of total ankle replacements featuring a local man who underwent an ankle fusion years ago, but was left without any range-of-motion in his foot. He recently received a total ankle replacement using the INBONE™ Total Ankle System and the PROPHECY™ Preoperative Navigation Alignment Guides from Wright Medical and was soon on his feet, walking normally and engaging in routine activities. Dr. Michael Cohen from South Florida Institute of Sports Medicine discusses his ability to customize the implant to the patient’s anatomy through a CT scan prior to the operation. A custom mold of the ankle is then produced, which helps remove the guesstimating common with other total ankle replacements.

Ankle replacement a viable option for injuries

Tucson, Arizona resident Michael Hill and orthopedic surgeon Dr. Geoffrey Landis at Tucson Orthopedic Institute were interviewed for an article on the INBONE™ Total Ankle replacement that appeared in the Sierra Vista Herald newspaper. In 2009, Hill fell off a six-foot ladder fracturing the lower portion of his right leg; the injury required major surgery. Six months later, Hill began to experience pain in his right ankle, an MRI revealed that the prior injury caused damage to his ankle joint and the cartilage was wearing out. After learning about the benefits of the INBONE™ Total Ankle replacement procedure, Hill elected to go back under the knife. Just 4 months after his surgery, Hill regained the mobility in his ankle and was back to work, pain free.
